WiFinder
WiFinder is a simple application that scans all of the local WiFi networks. It determines if they're locked (reporting which lock type to you) or if they're open. If they're open, it attempts to associate with them and open up Google's homepage. If it gets a result, it checks to see if it was actually from Google or not - many "open" networks actually require authentication, and redirect you to a login page. If it is from the right server, then the status icon is updated with a green check mark. Otherwise, you'll get either a red X (for redirected) or red - (for locked). For networks with the green check mark, feel free to touch the network and then touch Connect on the details page to associate with that Access Point!
It also supports repeatedly scanning the nearby networks and both updating the presented data and checking for network connectivity on newly found access points. You can even choose to be notified when a new open network is found via a buzz on the iPod Touch or vibration on the iPhone!
WiFinder FAQ
Can it connect to locked networks? WiFinder cannot currently connect to any locked networks (either WEP or WPA).
I'm getting an error number when I tap the Connect button. What does it mean? Either a scan was still in progress or the network is locked.
There is a weird visual effect with the refresh text... Sorry - that started in iPhone OS version 2.1. If I can ever get another update past Apple, that will be fixed.
What do the icons mean? Green checkmark = open, usable network. Red with an x = open, but redirected. Red with a line = secure with password required.
Why hasn't WiFinder been updated recently? Please see this post for details on that. Trust me, I'd love to!
Split the Bill
Split the Bill is a simple application to let you enter items from, say, a restaurant bill, assign them to the folks who were there (or as shared), and which then breaks down the calculations of how much each person owes. One interesting thing it does is calculate tip off of only the items you had, not the items + tax (as most of the "tip calculator" applications do). I'm working on a substantial update to make it more fun to use and support a few more scenarios.
